In Sydney, the whale migration occurs between May and November, but the absolute best time to see them is late June and early July—pretty much the last week of June and the first week of July, around the winter solstice.
What time of day is the best time to see them? Well, they are always swimming past, night and day. However, the best time is in the morning when their blow or spout is backlit, making them easier to see, or in the late morning to early afternoon when the sun is higher in the sky and there’s less glare.

During May, June, and July, the whales are heading north from Antarctica to warmer waters in tropical North Queensland. During approximately August, they remain around the breeding grounds in the north. By September, October, and November, they head south again, back to Antarctica.
When heading north, they are closer to shore than when coming south. This is because of the East Australian Current, which acts like an expressway heading southbound—something they avoid on their way up. On the return journey, they ride the current a few kilometers offshore, except for mothers and calves, who sometimes stay closer to shore to avoid predators in the current.
The easiest way to spot a whale is to look for its spout or vertical spray, silhouetted against the water or the sky. If you see a big splash, you’ve likely just missed a breach. On a calm day with no whitecaps, any disturbance in the water that’s not a boat is probably a whale. Windy days make spotting whales much harder, so choose calm days when you can see them coming from miles away.
Best place:
The best places in Sydney to see whales are spots with good elevation that project east into the ocean. Use Google Maps to find a headland with these features. Locations with deep water nearby also increase your chances of seeing a breach, as whales need depth to gain the momentum required to leap out of the water. Even without deep water, you might still see tail slapping or fin slapping, which is impressive too.
When you go whale watching, bring essentials like a bottle of water and a blanket—you’ll likely be sitting on the coastline for a while, so comfort is key. Also, pack plenty of patience. These are wild animals, and there are no guarantees. If you have binoculars, they can help you zoom in for a closer look, though you’ll likely see more whales without them at first.
