Why Early December is the Ideal Time to Visit Rome:
The first recommendation is to go in early December. There are several reasons for this: the weather is cool but great for walking, the city is decorated for Christmas, and there are many festive celebrations to enjoy. Tourism is a bit lower at this time, and if you decide to take a tour or book a class, it shouldn’t be too crowded. Of course, the Christmas markets make for a wonderful evening out, and the sun is shining. We survived our travel day, and now we are going to have some breakfast and then make our way to our other hotel today to see a little bit more of Rome. But it’s good to be back.
The next morning, now rested, we made our way to a little gem of a hotel, the Indigo Rome. Located in the heart of Rome, the hotel is just a stone’s throw away from the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza Navona, and Campo de’ Fiori—a perfect location to start exploring the Eternal City.
The large travertine stones on the facade come from the Colosseum. The building’s Renaissance style and travertine marble walls decorate the lobby, restaurant, and bar—examples of great eras. The building was originally designed in the 16th century by Donato Bramante, an environment drenched in charm and history, where Italian contemporary design is enclosed within ancient Roman walls.

Hello and welcome to the Indigo Rome St. George, one of my favorite hotels. I think one of my favorite things about this hotel, other than the location, is the windows and the view. Though it’s a very, very old building, it is decorated beautifully, as everything in Rome is beautiful. Well, everything in Italy is beautiful! And these are the other windows. They’re very high. The bed is super cozy, and again, with those touches of seating.
Here’s the other little window seat where we put all of our stuff. This is a premium room, and it has a lovely little walk-in closet and a mini bar that’s just so compact. Now, the bathroom is beautiful; it has a tub, which I love, and all the things to make it super cozy. Really nice bathroom.
It has all the things you need and some things that are just nice to have. I do love a good bathroom! So, we are going to settle in a little bit today, and then we are going out to explore. I think I’m going to try and get some boots at a vintage store, and I’m going to head over across the river to Trastevere and see what I can find. Everything’s decorated for Christmas, which is lovely. I’ve never seen Rome decorated for Christmas before.

Getting out for a walk with the goal of finding a thrifted pair of boots led to the discovery of a restaurant, which was a rare find and our recommendation for a light meal when near Piazza Navona. The food is a great example of high-quality Roman cuisine, and it’s a delightful area to explore. Taverna Ape had a lively outdoor eating area with warming lamps and friendly service. We spoke with a lovely family with ties to Toronto, who gave us some ideas for local events and where to find some beautiful views of the city. We then chatted excitedly about our afternoon adventures as we made our way back to the hotel.
Evenings in Rome: A Magical Experience:
The early evening has a very different feel, as shops close and restaurants and tavernas open. Just observing people go about life here is interesting.
What is this? How I see it. Some cool light fixtures. Alright, what’s this place called? We’re looking for gelato. See where it’s chillin’? cast… having a great meal, huh? Usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and it’s now a museum. The castle was once the tallest building in Rome, and it is renowned for its unique round shape.
Piazza Navona, a celebrated and picturesque market by day, quickly turns into a buzzy nightlife center. Okay, that was delicious. We really enjoyed this little place. How’ve you been? Are you okay with it?
When we were last in Rome, we were unable to visit the Vatican Museums, so we booked an early morning tour. We suggest this time slot, as it gets very busy at any time of year. Following that, we found a lunch spot and took our time walking back to our hotel.
some key things to remember:
If romance is your goal, leave room to be spontaneous. We booked one excursion, the Vatican Museums, and I’d also add a pasta-making class or something you can take part in together with others. This left us four uninterrupted days and evenings to explore when we were energized and enjoy the hotel’s luxury amenities if the weather didn’t cooperate or if we felt lazy that day. Another tip is to dine in different kinds of dining.
enjoying the fine dining:
Getting dressed up and enjoying the fine dining found in Rome is sometimes wonderful, but even better can be a delicious, casual meal with a relaxed vibe and few expectations. So cool with the gas station—how do they fit a gas station in here? And this is lovely—beautiful orange trees over there. If the budget allows, find accommodation that puts you close to the places you want to see and things you want to do, so you don’t spend too much time in traffic or trying to arrange transportation. A quick walk back to the hotel when the weather disappoints is ideal. Room service and a relaxing day spent at the hotel spa can certainly set the mood, and simply exploring the area around your accommodation often creates those special shared moments.
Explore Iconic Landmarks: Pantheon & Piazza Navona.
After a rest, we headed out for the evening. It’s the Pantheon! The Pantheon has represented the maximum expression of the glory of Rome for over 2,000 years. The Pantheon was an inspiration for one of the greatest architects of the Renaissance, Raphael, who requested it to become his place of eternal rest. It is the only Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries.
Navona Square (Piazza Navona) is famous for the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini, the Church of St. Agnes in Agone by Borromini and others, the Pamphili Palace by Rainaldi with its long gallery designed by Borromini and frescoed by Pietro de Cortona, the Fontana del Moro (Fountain of the Moor), and the Fountain of Neptune. A Christmas market is held in the piazza every year. the search for the perfect pair of thrifted Italian boots.
Continued until finally, we found them, and just in time, as the next day was my birthday, and we had plans for walking. It was chilly out, so a new pair of boots were just the thing.
We happened to be outside Dior, and Dior looks absolutely gorgeous at Christmas time in Rome. We savored that last evening and will never forget our Roman holiday.
