  • Attend Shows.
  • Take the Sky Safari.
  • Walk the Zoo Trails.

Explore Wildlife Zones:

Taronga Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals, including some incredible native Australian wildlife as well as animals from all over the world. The zoo is divided into different sections based on the animals’ habitats. Let’s start exploring!

First up, let’s take a look at some Australian wildlife. Taronga Zoo is one of the best places to get up close and personal with kangaroos, koalas, and emus. Just look at these amazing creatures! These are animals you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

Check out the emu, the second-largest bird in the world. Even though they can’t fly, these guys can sprint up to 50 km/h.

You can also get up close with koalas here and even pet them.

Now we are moving into the African Savannah. Check out the giraffes, chimpanzees, and lions.

Look at these tall beauties—the tallest animals on Earth! Their necks can be up to 6 feet long, but interestingly, they still have the same number of neck bones as humans.

Comment below: How many bones does the human body have?

Giraffes spend most of their day munching on leaves from tall trees, and each giraffe’s spots are unique, just like a fingerprint.

Meet the chimps, our closest living relatives, sharing about 98% of our DNA.

Now let’s head into the African lion section.

Did you know that a lion’s roar can be heard from up to 8 kilometers away?
Here’s the meerkat—small but mighty. You might recognize them from The Lion King and Madagascar. These little guys live in groups called mobs and take turns acting as lookouts while others forage for food. Known for their iconic stance, they use it to scan for predators like eagles. Meerkats are super social and thrive in the deserts of South Africa.

Now let’s Discuss the majestic elephants, the largest land animals on Earth. Their trunks are incredibly versatile—they use them to grab food, drink water, and even greet each other.

Attend Shows:, Take the Sky Safari and Walk the Zoo Trails.

Next, let’s head into the Seal Show. There are two shows per day, one at 11:00 a.m. and another at 2:00 p.m.

California sea lions are pretty unique. They have a very distinct vocalization and an incredible ability to move both on land and in water. Their flippers, which share a similar bone structure to human hands, help them walk on land and swim gracefully in the ocean. Did you know seals like Diego can actually outrun most humans on land?

In the water, seals are even more impressive. They use a technique called porpoising to move efficiently, leaping out of the water to catch their breath while swimming. This helps them chase prey and escape predators like sharks.

Diego is a fantastic seal, but it’s time to discuss Murphy, the oldest seal at Taronga Zoo, who is 20 years old and turns 21 this December. Murphy is a role model for the younger seals and is incredibly skilled at catching fish using his whiskers, which help detect prey in murky waters.

Unfortunately, overfishing is a serious issue, making it harder for seals like Murphy to find food. It’s essential to protect our oceans for marine life.

Now let’s head to the Antarctic section.
Say hello to the penguins! These flightless birds are expert swimmers, using their wings like flippers to glide through the water. While they’re often associated with icy regions, many penguin species live in temperate climates.

One of the best reasons to visit Taronga Zoo is the breathtaking view of the city and harbor.

Next, let’s watch the Bird Show.
The birds here are incredible, demonstrating natural behaviors and instincts. For example, Slammer, a bird with a hooked beak, uses tools to crack open eggs—a skill that showcases their intelligence.

We also meet Wraith, a barn owl, who glides silently and is one of the most common owls in the world. Owls have had a long-standing connection with human culture across many civilizations.

After the Bird Show, let’s head to Tiger Trek. This immersive experience replicates the forests of Sumatra, Indonesia.

Here we see the Sumatran tiger, the smallest and most critically endangered tiger species. Native to Sumatra Island, these tigers are known for their darker fur and thicker black stripes.
